Über Mich

Hi! My name is Andy, and I have been a teacher of some kind for over a decade now. Any time I have an interest in learning something, I find that the best test of how well I know it, is whether I can teach it! Presently, my career is as a music teacher, primarily teaching piano. In the past, I've also taught photography, rock climbing (and general outdoor activities), and academic subjects like English, History, and Psychology. Both my parents are Chinese, though I was born in America. My dad is from Shanghai (and grew up in Taiwan), so that's my Mandarin side. My mom is from Hong Kong, and hence the Cantonese side. I attended Chinese School growing up, which is where I learned the reading/writing Chinese from. In school, I studied Spanish, Ancient Hebrew, and Koine Greek too.

I believe the best kind of education relationship is a partnership between teacher and student. Before I teach, I want to learn about my student: what are your goals for learning the language? what are the practical applications that you need to be able to do? what are your interests? how do you learn best? Depending on what your goals are, we may focus on all the aspects of language (speaking, listening, reading, writing) or only on a few of those... it all depends on what you're hoping to accomplish!

Learning a language should be fun and natural, but it also takes work! Thus, I do expect students to do their part if there are "assignments" or practice exercises, because these benefit the student. If you as a student ever feel like something isn't effective, please tell me! I love feedback even if the feedback is "can we change things, I don't think this is helping me."
