I am a teacher with an MS in education, who retired after 20 years of teaching. My subjects were mathematics, and computer repair, networking, programming, and security. I have spoken 5 languages in my life but did not study the recent three them in a classroom. One of them does not fit in the box, an unwritten, tribal language of the Samburu tribe in the Northern Frontier District of Kenya, where I lived for four years. I was able to do that because I studied phonetics, phonology, and morphology with Summer Institute of Linguistics. That is partly why I concentrate on pronunciation. I just love languages.
I have also worked as a skilled worker in factories before I earned a BS in chemistry and worked as an industrial engineer for several years after graduation. I retired from teaching in the public school system last year and got my TEFL certificate from ITA, including an additional class certifying me for business English and teaching young learners. I would like to teach adults in China who have reached at least the Intermediate level and who need to speak to American English clients and/or colleagues in English.
I would like to be able to design and teach my own lesson plans and teach a student or group for a number of lessons to achieve specific goals. My current position has me teaching group and private lessons on a completely random basis using lesson plans provided by the company. I have developed a following of advanced adults who are progressing nicely and who specify me as the teacher they want. My teaching style is very low-key and mutually interactive. I talk with the student for a while to evaluate the initial phonetic issues and work on those and others issues systematically in class while students also do out-of-class exercises until we have achieved student goals.
I would like to teach Chinese students particularly. That has been a sort of life dream and I am also starting to learn Mandarin now. The great majority of my current students in 30-40 classes per week are Chinese, so I know full well what this entails. Again, I would like to work on pronunciation and particular language issues related to business, IT, mathematics, computer security, and computer networking. This could also include presentations, writing reports, office relationships, management styles, and engineering. Since I have worked in computer networking and security for 25 years, I am totally fluent with the vocabulary and methodologies of those parts of IT.
I would describe myself as happy, positive, direct in a gentle way, sensitive, thoughtful, and caring. I do not profess to have all the answers on day #1. I am a pragmatic, systematic technician with a heart. My classes are full of discussion and compliments that stress the solutions while avoiding anything resembling blame.
I am looking for a company with whom I can work who has a platform where I can operate comfortably and efficiently while teaching at home as I do now. I really like the way your web page is laid out and your school is organized.
