Since I was a child I’ve wanted to be a great actor. Not an actor entrenched in ego and fame, but one who captivates her audience; taking them on a wild journey where they might learn something about themselves. After graduating from Tisch School of The Arts at NYU I’ve had some luck in pursuing my dream. I’ve recurred on television series, appeared in national commercials, and performed in front of hundreds of people on stage. I think great actors, like great teachers, must be masters at connecting and relating to people. Although finding work as an actor can be difficult, I have found different ways to fulfill my desire to perform for and influence others. I’ve enjoyed working as a bartender and sales associate, which have brought me the opportunity to engage with people from all over the world. However, the most rewarding of jobs was teaching High School students about art at the Metropolitan Museum during an internship. I felt impassioned to get the students to connect with the material and I was thrilled to see these teens having fun while learning. I took this as an indication to explore the teaching world further. I began teaching ESL with the online school 51Talk a year and a half ago. I’ve taught over two thousand lessons, both group classes and one on one. My students have come from all walks of life and I’ve had the opportunity to teach a broad spectrum of lessons. I have experience teaching small children the alphabet, prepping college students for TOEFL/ IELTS exams, and training businessmen for their work presentations. My teaching style is conversation based, I find that building the student’s confidence in speaking is key to learning a new language. Due to my experience as an actress my greatest strength is in accent correction and pronunciation, it’s vital not only to speak but to be understood. I am a highly efficient and motivated person with strong communication and leadership skills. My schedule is flexible and I am always enthusiastic about meeting new people and learning about their culture.
I am an English-Spanish translator and teacher currently living in Spain. I first started teaching at NIU, Illinois, USA, as a Teaching Assistant, and once I graduated from my Master's degree I started to work as a Court interpreter and translator. After a few years I came to Spain, where I am teaching English and Spanish, while I still work as a translator (specialized in Psychology). Being a translator helps me better understand the process of learning a foreign language as an adult, and develop my teaching and language coaching techniques. Let me show you how - let's build your English (or Spanish) skills together and improve what you already have. You will enjoy learning with me!
I'm a CELTA qualified native English speaker with a background in business. I hold an MBA and am a qualified business coach. I'm looking to help business professionals acquire, develop and perfect their English competence, whether that be to achieve a required test score, help with the transition into a new role, location or situation that requires additional English language skills or simply to address a specific contextual need such as preparing a presentation, facilitating a meeting or producing a document. General and business-related themes that I typically explore with students include travel, working from home, motivation, culture, history, marketing and advertising, climate change, difficult conversations, unconscious bias and planning. My teaching methods are informal and relaxed and I adjust my teaching style and lesson plan to meet the needs of my students. I use a lot of video and reading material to prompt conversation and focus my lessons on speaking, listening and reading but we will typically do a pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary exercise in each session. From time to time, and with my students' permission, I will record the lesson and will use the audio file to compile a report detailing improvement areas such as pronunciation or grammar. My goal is to help you improve your English within the kind of real-life business scenarios you encounter every day and...above all...have fun on the journey!
Hello! I am excited to join you at Verbling! First I will tell you a bit about my academic background and tutoring experience. I have a Master's degree in Clinical Psychology. I have also worked as a tutor for a number of years. I have loved tutoring in all subjects up to the college level. My favorite subject to teach has always been English. I enjoy helping with writing, developing conversational skills, and improving reading. I have worked with a number of ESL students from various countries including Japan, Korea, Brazil, Spain, Turkey, Egypt, Israel, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy. It has been a joy to conduct these lessons with my students, and I look forward to all the future ones to come! Now about my teaching style. :) If I had to use one word to describe my teaching style it would be ENCOURAGING. I love to give praise and always focus on growth. I also love to promote taking positive risks and trying new things, even though they may seem scary at first. In the past I have used a conversations textbook to structure my lessons. Through this method I have been able to facilitate deep conversations between myself and the student. At the same time I have been able to listen for sentence structure, grammar and pronunciation, and make corrections where necessary. My students tend to enjoy the topics and usually have a lot to say, which is always welcomed! I am also happy to focus on specific areas where the student is looking to grow. For instance maybe a lesson on proper sentence structure, reading comprehension, drafting letters, general writing, and presenting out loud. Whatever your English language learning need is, I am here to help you find it and attend to it together, until you feel confident and comfortable in that area. That said, I hope to see you in the class very soon! Mariam
